Do You Have A Slow Computer?
Filed under Computer MaintenanceMay 13Is your computer still running as fast as when you bought it?
All computers will slow down after you start using the programs, files, and folders that are installed on the hard drive disk. You can increase the speed of your computer by using some simple steps located in the control panel.
Every time you use the computer whether it’s surfing the web, or creating files and folders for pictures, documents, or software.
===================================================
When you install software, it will load temporary files onto the computer to install a program. Once the program is installed, it will usually remove these temporary files automatically. But it doesn’t actually remove the files. What it does is leave the code open to be written over when information is added by another program. Information is not removed when you press the delete button on the keyboard. It just allows the computer to reuse the space that contained the information. It will re-write information into that space.When you install or uninstall programs, files, or folders, pictures, or any type of information on to the hard drive disk. The computer will put that information into any empty space it can find. There are broken links, shortcuts, and code that are called garbage left on the hard drive disk.
One way to eliminate this garbage is by using the defragmenting tool, located in the Control Panel of the Start Menu. Click Start, then Control Panel, Then Maintenance Link. Depending on which operating system that you have. But if you haven’t defragmented your hard drive in a long time, and/or if you have a lot of programs and files on your hard drive, it will probably take several hours to defragment it for the first time. The best time is to do it at night when you are not using the computer.
Next fix is a little more complicated, but it will do a lot to speed up a computer. That is to clean your registry, every time you install or uninstall a program it will leave fragmented files behind. This will cause the computer to have to hunt through all the junk in order to find the files that it needs to open the programs and files that you want. There is a tool on your computer that will clean up some of the temporary files that programs use.
But you will have to purchase a third party registry cleaner in order to clean up the registry. Before you use a third party registry cleaner do some research on the product and read reviews from some of the web companies that use these products. They have nothing to lose to tell you the truth about a program. If fact it’s their job to rate these products and let us know really how good they are. You can also find forums about the products and find out what other people say about the product.
Before cleaning your registry, always backup your registry before making any changes to it. Making changes to the registry can cause your computer to become unstable and crash or stop functioning all together.
You can disable startup programs that you don’t use that much. To do this click on the start menu and type msconfig into the run window. Then go to the start up tab and click on it. There you will see a list of startup programs that are running. You can disable the programs that you don’t need or use that much, by unchecking the box. Then click close, a window will appear that tells you that you have to restart your computer before the changes will take effect. Restart your computer and it will not let the programs that you checked start until you go back and uncheck the boxes.
Another tip is to clean your computer of cookies. Most web sites you visit will put cookies on your computer. A cookie is usually simply a small piece of code that tells the websites that you visit that you have been there before. These are tracking cookies. They will slow your computer down also.
You can also increase the amount of RAM memory in your computer. Actually the more RAM memory that you have in the computer, means the less the computer has to go back to the hard drive to retrieve more data as needed. A good rule of thumb is to double what you already have installed.
Warning do not mix RAM modules. If you install more RAM memory then buy matched pairs of RAM modules. Do not use different types of RAM modules in the computer.
When you do these steps your computer will load programs and files and folders faster.
You can go to PCMag.com or PCWorld.com and find information on different registry cleaners.
