  • Things You Need to Know about Data Recovery

    Jun 23

What would you do if something happens to your hard drive and don’t know how to recover your data?

Most people will be in a hurry to retrieve this data and you don’t want to have to wait for it. Business’s on the other hand it’s critical that they can get their data back so they can keep working.

    ============================================

Before attempting data recovery yourself or having a specialist retrieve it for you.

    1. Do you really want to spend the money to have a specialist to retrieve the data?
    2. Do you want to spend the time and effort to retrieve it yourself?
    3. Would it be faster to reload the data or retrieve the data?
    4. Is it valuable enough to cover the cost of retrieval?

You might have more questions than these to make. But think through before making any decisions. Because some hard drives are rendered so that none of the data can be retrieved no matter what service or program that you use.

Most people wait until they start having problems with their hard drives before worrying about their data. Unfortunately hard drives are a lot like cars. Sometimes you are able to get it to a mechanic, but most of the time when your car breaks down you are on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

The hard drive can fail the same way. Sometimes it will tell that it’s having problems and you can buy a new hard drive and transfer your data. Sometimes the hard drive just dies and you have no chance
whatsoever to retrieve anything at all.

There are data recovery specialists. It is all these people do and they are good at what they do. now if you are a using a computer to store your pictures and everyday computing needs, you will not want
to spend the money sometimes that is required for the specialists to retrieve your personal data off of the hard drive.

If you are using a desktop computer, then you can have a second hard drive installed in the computer so that you can make backup copies. This way your data is safe and can be easily retrieved.

If you don’t want a second hard drive using resources in the computer you can use an external hard drive. Which you can unplug when not in use. Then when you want to make a backup copy of pictures, files, and folders. You can plug it in and make a copy of what you want. Then disconnect it again.

But if you are using a laptop it is actually easier to lose your data because of dropping your laptop, spilling liquids on it, leaving it in the car on a hot day, and many more ways to lose your data. Because the laptop is versatile and can be easily damaged. The external hard drive will be the only to go. Because there is no room for a second hard drive. But the backup procedure will be the same as for the desktop computer.

But business’s will have to have these specialists come to their company to retrieve the data. Some for security reasons, and other reasons.

These data recovery specialists can most of the time retrieve data within a short amount of time. Depending on the size of hard drive and the physical condition of it. But in some cases the company will have to send the hard drive or complete tower to them to get the data retrieved.

First the specialists will try to determine what caused the failure to occur. Most cases the hard drive will have to be dismanteled the disks removed and read on another machine and the data copied to
another hard drive equivalent to the one they have. These procedures are not cheap.

These people are specialists at what they do. They know hard drives and how they operate. They will try to retrieve the data without taking the hard drive apart. But most cases the disks have to be
removed. Depending on the type of failure.

These specialists are on call for most companies so they can be there quickly to get the computer back up and running. But usually only big corporations can use these types of services. These types of services usually charge for time to and from the work site, plus time there, plus any software they might need in order to retrieve the data.

There are programs on the market that will retrieve data if it there is nothing physically wrong with the hard drive. They are pretty easy to setup and can usually retrieve the data and put it on another hard drive. Norton’s Ghost is a good program to copy an exact copies of old hard drive. But like I said this is only good if the hard drive is still working.

Also they won’t help if your computer has a virus because it will copy the virus also. You will have to clean the virus off of the hard drive before you run the program.

Ten years ago it was not very cheap to have second hard drives either external or internal hard drives.
Twenty years ago there were not any type of external hard drive available. The closest thing that you could get was a tape drive.

These were very costly and after a few uses the tape would tend to distort making data unreadable.

But today hard drives are very affordable. Most of the hard drives use USB plugins now so that you don’t even have to shut your computer down in order hook them up. By far this is the easiest and fastest way to backup your data. This way you wouldn’t need a retrieval specialist.

If you don’t want the hassle of keeping up with the tedious tasks of backing up your files. Now there are online backup sources that will backup your data and encrypt the data. These are very affordable to
use and easy to retrieve your data when you get your computer back up and running.

If you are operating a business this might not be for you. You might want to be able to keep your data backup close at hand. One or the other is a good way to keep your data safe. But with a external hard
drive you don’t have to pay someone to do something that you can do yourself.

These are points that you will have to weight and answer for yourself. But don’t forget that there are specialists out there that can and will retrieve your valuable data.

Now there is another way to backup your data which is fine also. But it is time consuming. You can use CD’s and DVD’s to backup your data. These disks will last a long time and give you another option.

With this being said these disks are easily damaged and when you change data all the time this might not be for you. But with the dual layer DVD’s and CD’s you can pile a lot of information on a disk. You would want to do this with data that is not going to change. Like pictures, music, videos which take up a lot of room on your hard drive. If you take your time you can create albums with your music, pictures, and videos.

At the prices of the hardware and software these days there is not any reason why you couldn’t use anyone of these ways to keep your data safe. Remember to backup often. At least once a week. The
longer you wait to backup your data, the more data will not be backed up when you need
